Recycling

When we moved into our house, we were excited to find out we had access to curbside recycling & they separate for you!  So, we immediately began recycling.  We've since found a few downsides to the program & our personal system.  They only supply you with 2 small bins and pick up recycling on the first Monday of each month.  Our bins are generally overflowing by pick up day.  We have also recently learned that only a small portion of what we have been putting in our bins is actually able to be recycled by them.  Much less is going into our bins now.

The other problem we have is our personal system for recycling.  It goes something like this:

  1. Container is empty...rinse if needed.

  2. Put said recyclable in recycle "pile".  Oh yeah, we totally just put our cleaned recyclables on the counter (have I mentioned we have a small kitchen with virtually no storage?).

  3. At the end of each day, carry recyclables down to the garage & put them in the bins.
My issue?  The whole "pile" on the counter thing!  I hate it!  All containers are clean of course, but still.

It.  Looks.  Awful.

And, yes, I do have a Dr. Pepper problem...I'm working on it.

So, I am in search of a better system.  I don't want to spend any money...I'm cheap frugal, you know.  I am thinking about using some old metal farm buckets we have.  Maybe put them under a bench or something?  I'm just not sure.

I love this double one!

Since there's no extra storage space in the kitchen it's going have to be visible, so pretty is key.  Any suggestions for a "pretty" recycling station that's free or relatively cheap?

We recycle too. We also have a small kitchen but what we do is I bought well my mom bought it for me a few Christmases ago its a double garbage storer. On the left we have garbage on the right is the recyclables such as cans, containers. My Husband empties it once or twice a week downstairs in the recycle center(lol). We also keep 2 baskets on the stairwell where we put the paper. We are lucky though our recyclables get picked up every week with the garbage but my husband does not always put it out each week depends how much we have to go. There are a few things they don't take as well like glass jars.

O and I love Dr Pepper too. If I buy it I would drink it every day.

Hmm maybe I will blog about how we do ours at my blog soon.

that sucks about your recycling :(

where we are we get weekly recycling

the best thing you can do about finding recycling in your area is to use the internet. also ask your town if you have a place you can drop off recycling in between pickups.

if that doesn't work you can use clear blue biodegradable bags when you run out of room for your co mingle or you can always go to walmart or home depot and pick up another container (i know you said you didn't want to spend money but it's an idea)

paint those white & antique them or leave them how they are & stencil labels on them... then hang them or line them under the bench you mentioned!

here is a pottery barn room with buckets that are hung to give you an idea of what I mean...

I'm ashamed that the city has weekly recycling & our bin has never been used for more than a catch all in the garage.

Sounds like we all have the same problem. I too leave my recycles on the counter, close to the garage door, and it adds up. The problem with putting the buckets on the floor or next to the trash is that the kids get into them!
